The Story Behind Raggedy Ann
If you don’t already know Raggedy Ann is a fictional story book character who has been charming and entertaining little ones for a hundred years. The Raggedy Ann character was initially made as a doll in 1915.
This adorable, mischievous old-fashioned rag doll and her entourage of charming toy friends were first revealed to young children in 1918 by author Johnny Gruelle.
The traditional Raggedy Ann always has an optimistic warm attitude as well as a calm solution to any difficulties
that might come up.
Johnny Gruelle centered his main story book character on a real rag doll that had once belonged to his own mother. The rag doll was discovered in the attic in an old trunk by Marcella, Gruelle’s daughter.
It’s believed that the original Raggedy Ann doll had no face, and it was actually Marcella’s dad who put the red triangle nose, separated mouth and famous black eyes on the first Raggedy Ann doll and than Marcella’s Grandma made a new dress for Raggedy Ann.
Gruel had made up stories about Raggedy Ann to entertain his sick daughter Marcella. It was only when Marcella had died from her sickness in 1918, that Gruelle had immersed himself into his work and started writing the stories he had invented about Raggedy Ann.
To help in selling the books that Gruelle had illustrated and written, the family had created white and blue clad rag dolls with red yarn hair, named Raggedy Ann, that was sold with each book.
The Raggedy Ann dolls that were first sold were dressed red-stripped stockings, flowered frock, and a flouncy white apron and underneath her flowered frock is a fat red heart that labeled “I Love You”. Now 100 years later, Raggedy Ann has multiplied in the millions.
For those of you who weren’t too familiar with the original Raggedy Ann and Andy books and dolls the photo above gives you an idea for when you are creating your Raggedy Ann costume.
Now that we know the story behind the original Raggedy Ann doll it’s time to put together your own unique version of a Raggedy Ann Costume.
